the power of play
nakivale refugee settlement, uganda

Day in and day out, up to 200 children and youths from Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, South Sudan, and Somalia experience the power of sports for community building and combatting psychological trauma.
Raise Chess Academy (RCA) – which began as an initiative to teach refugee children chess – organises football tournaments for girls and boys in Nakivake Refugee Settlement in Uganda. Founder Julien Mayele told motion that “being on the pitch gives everyone a sense of belonging and brings us together as a community, although we are from different countries and speak different languages,” Julien says.
We sent disposable cameras to the refugee settlement and asked the kids and youths to capture their engagement with sports. “The kids had so much fun taking pictures. They had never seen these kinds of cameras and thought they were toys,” Julien told us.
Enjoy, reflect, and, as always: stay curious.
